Naming a baby around a constraint you already have

Very few couples name a baby from nothing. By the time you're seriously making a list, you almost always have a rule you've quietly agreed on: the new name should start with the same letter as the older sibling, or honor a grandmother whose name began with M, or stay clearly unisex because you're not finding out the sex. Those rules feel like obstacles when you're scrolling an endless alphabetical name site — but they're actually the most useful thing you have. A constraint is just a filter you haven't applied yet, and applying it up front turns a thousand irrelevant names into a short, relevant stream.

The letter constraint is the most common — and the easiest to honor

Matching a starting letter is the single most frequent naming constraint we hear about, and it comes from two directions. The first is sibling symmetry: you named your first child Ella and now the second one "has to" start with E, or you've decided all your kids will share an initial. The second is heritage: a relative you want to remember started their name with a specific letter, and honoring the letter feels more natural than reusing the exact name. Either way, the mechanics are the same. This is where filtering earns its keep, because the intersection of "starts with J" and "girl" is a genuinely small set that would be miserable to find by hand-scanning a full list. If the combination turns up nothing, that's honest feedback rather than a bug — some letter-and-gender pairings really are sparse in a bank of common given names, and the tool tells you so instead of stretching to pad the results. When that happens, loosening one constraint (widening the gender to Unisex, or trying an adjacent letter) usually reopens the pool.

A note on the Unisex option specifically: it isn't a catch-all that dumps every name together. It draws from names actually classified as unisex, which is exactly what you want if staying gender-neutral is itself the constraint — because you're not finding out the sex, or because a genuinely ambiguous name is the goal. Setting gender to Any is different: that removes the gender rule entirely and lets girl, boy, and unisex names all through. Pick Unisex when neutrality is the requirement, and Any when you simply don't have a gender rule.

Use no-repeats so a session actually covers new ground

Once you've narrowed to a constrained pool, the enemy is seeing the same handful of names over and over. A small filtered pool means random draws will collide often, and nothing kills a naming session faster than the tool handing you "Amelia" for the fourth time. Turn on "No repeats this session" and each draw is pulled from the names you haven't seen yet, so clicking through the pool genuinely walks the whole constrained set instead of bouncing around the same three favorites. When you exhaust the pool, the tool resets and starts over — a natural signal that you've now seen everything that fits your rule and it's time to either loosen the constraint or move to your shortlist.

This pairs especially well with the letter constraint. If you're committed to a starting letter, the entire relevant universe of names is small enough that no-repeats lets you exhaustively review it in one sitting — you can honestly say you looked at every common name that fits, which is a surprisingly reassuring thing to be able to tell yourself when you later defend the choice to relatives.

When you're not wedded to the constraint yet

Sometimes the constraint itself is undecided — you like the idea of matching initials but haven't picked which letter, or you're honoring a relative whose name could anchor on more than one letter. In that case, don't force it.
