Split a video call into breakout rooms in one click

Anyone who's run a workshop over video knows the dead air. You announce breakout groups, then spend the next ninety seconds dragging names around a tiny dialog while twenty people watch a "assigning…" spinner and quietly check their phones. The built-in "automatically" button helps, but it can't keep a presenter with their note-taker, it reshuffles into the same cliques every time, and it gives you nothing to paste into the chat for people who got dropped. A standalone breakout room assigner does the split for you in a click and hands back something you can actually share.

Paste the roster, get rooms

The breakout room assigner takes your participants one name per line — exactly the shape you get when you copy the attendee list out of Zoom, Teams, or Meet. Hit the button and it shuffles everyone and deals them into rooms. There's no account, no add-in to install, and nothing leaves your browser; it's just a fast, neutral splitter you can keep open in a second tab while you run the call.

Choose rooms by count or by size

Two modes cover how people actually think about groups. By # rooms is for "I want four breakout rooms, spread everyone across them evenly" — you give it the number of rooms and it balances the heads, so twenty-two people across four rooms become two rooms of six and two of five rather than three full rooms and one straggler. By size per room flips it: you say "groups of three" and it makes as many rooms as that takes, letting the last room run a little short if the numbers don't divide cleanly. Reach for count when the number of discussions matters (one per facilitator, say) and size when the conversation only works at a certain headcount.

Keep the people who must stay together

Real rosters have constraints. A presenter needs to be with their co-host; two colleagues are sharing one laptop; a translator has to sit with the person they're translating for. Wrap those names in parentheses on a single line — (Alex, Sam) — and the tool treats them as one unit that always lands in the same room. Everyone else still gets shuffled around them. It's the one thing the platform's auto-assign can't do, and it's usually the exact thing that forces people into manual dragging in the first place. You can lock as many little clusters as you need; each parenthesised group simply travels together through the shuffle.

Stop the same pairs clustering every round

For a multi-round session — speed-networking, rotating discussions, a class that breaks out several times — the worst outcome is people landing with the same neighbours twice. Tick Avoid last round's pairs and the assigner remembers who has already shared a room and actively works against repeats. Behind the scenes it generates a batch of candidate arrangements each time you draw and keeps the one that puts the most new pairings together, then records those pairings so the next round avoids them too. It's a best-effort spread rather than a hard guarantee — with small numbers some overlap is unavoidable — but across a few rounds it noticeably mixes the room instead of recreating the same cliques. The memory rolls over a long history of pairs, so even a long session keeps finding fresh combinations.

If you'd rather every draw be a clean slate, just leave that box unticked and each split is an independent fresh shuffle with no memory carried between rounds.

Output you can actually paste

Each split lays the rooms out as cards on the page so you can read them at a glance while you set the rooms up, and there's a plain-text version — Room 1: …, Room 2: … — ready to drop straight into the meeting chat. That last part quietly solves the real pain: the people who don't get auto-moved, or who rejoin late, can just read which room they belong to instead of waiting for you to find them in the dialog. The assignment travels as text, which means it survives a dropped connection and a "wait, which room am I?" far better than a drag-and-drop that only lives inside one app.

When a neighbouring tool fits better

Breakout rooms are really just groups with a video-call accent. If you're dividing a class or a team into groups that aren't tied to a meeting at all, a random team / group divider does the same even split in a more general frame. If your whole goal across many sessions is that everyone eventually works with everyone, the no-repeat group mixer is built around that promise. And when the seating is physical rather than virtual, a random seating chart places people at tables instead of rooms.

Less dead air, better discussions

The point of breakouts is the conversation, not the logistics of starting one. Paste your attendee list, pick rooms by count or by size, lock together anyone who has to stay paired, turn on the avoid-repeats option if you're running more than one round, and let the breakout room assigner hand you a clean, shareable split before the spinner would even have finished thinking.
