Random Date Idea Generator

Random date idea: free, budget, or fancy.

Built and maintained by Paul Clark, Redmoon Software · Last checked

Stuck on what to do for date night? This generator suggests a random date or activity idea from one of three budget lists — free, budget, or fancy — so it fits the occasion. It's a low-effort way to break out of the same old routine and try something new together.

Filter. Choose Free, Budget, or Fancy in Options — budget is the only filter.

How it works

  1. Filter. Choose Free, Budget, or Fancy in Options — budget is the only filter.
  2. Generate. Click "Idea me" to get a random date or activity suggestion.
  3. Re-roll. Click again for another idea. Repeats can happen, and Recent results shows your last ten.

About the Random Date Idea Generator

Three budgets that are actually three moods

The Budget option — the only filter — splits ideas into free, budget and fancy. The split is nominally about money and in practice about effort and occasion: the free ideas are mostly walks, home cooking and things you can decide on twenty minutes beforehand, the budget ideas mostly involve leaving the house with little or nothing to book, and the fancy ideas usually need a reservation.

That last point is worth planning around — several of the fancy ideas cannot be acted on tonight. Draw from that category a week ahead rather than at seven on a Friday.

What the ideas deliberately are not

Every idea is a category of thing to do rather than a specific venue: "Live music — small jazz club, not arena" rather than a named bar. Nothing here knows your city, the weather, what is open, or what either of you has already done.

The intended use is to break the loop where two people take turns saying "I don't mind, what do you want to do?" A drawn idea gives you something concrete to react to, and reacting is much easier than generating. An idea you both immediately reject is still progress, because it usually surfaces what you actually wanted.

Turning a draw into a plan

  • Draws are independent with no memory, so a repeat is normal in a long session. Switch budget to refresh the feel.
  • Some ideas are strongly seasonal or weather-dependent. Discard them rather than committing to stargazing in the rain.
  • Drawing three and choosing between them works better than drawing one and obeying it.
  • The last ten ideas are kept in this browser if you want to look back at what you rejected.

Frequently asked questions

Can I filter by budget?

Yes — budget is the only filter. Choose Free, Budget ($), or Fancy ($$$) in Options and every idea comes from that list.

How do I avoid getting repeats?

There's no no-repeat option, so each draw is independent and a repeat can come up. The Recent results panel shows your last ten ideas, so you can spot one and re-roll.

Are the suggestions random?

Yes. Each idea is picked using your browser's crypto.getRandomValues, so you get a genuinely varied mix.

Is anything I do here tracked?

No. The generator runs entirely in your browser and doesn't send your choices or history to any server.
