Draws come from 144 words across animals, food, places, and random categories, every one tagged easy, medium, or hard, with 48 words at each difficulty level.

About the Random Hangman Word Generator
Difficulty is built into the word list
Every word carries an easy, medium or hard rating, and the ratings are mostly about length. Easy words are three to five letters — cat, jam, park. Hard words run to eight letters or more, and many include letters a guesser burns turns discovering — xylophone, rhinoceros, pumpernickel.
Four categories are available — animals, food, places and a mixed set labelled Random — with 36 words each, 12 at every difficulty. Choosing a category and a difficulty together is what lets you match the word to the age group, and a hard word from the food category is a very different challenge from a hard word from places.
Hosting without spoiling it
The whole tool is designed around one problem: the host has to see the word and the players must not. A draw arrives as blanks, with the letter count and the category and difficulty above it; the word itself appears only when you press Reveal word. So you can draw with the screen visible, then turn it away before revealing. Until you reveal it, Copy and Export CSV give the blanks, not the word; after Reveal word they give the word.
The No repeats option keeps a separate record for each category and difficulty combination so a long session does not come back to the same word, which matters more in hangman than elsewhere because a repeated word is instantly recognised by whoever guessed it last time.
House rules worth settling first
- Agree whether guessing the whole word early counts, and whether a wrong whole-word guess costs a turn.
- For younger players, easy words plus a category announced in advance makes the game winnable — hangman with no category is much harder than adults remember.
- Recent results records a word only once you reveal it, so a word you skip without revealing leaves no trace — reveal each one if you want a record of what came up.
- Nothing here draws the gallows or tracks guesses; paper still does that better.

Why does the word show as blanks first?
So the person drawing can host without spoiling the game. The result shows underscores, the letter count, and the category — the actual word appears only after you press Reveal.
What categories and difficulties can I pick from?
Four categories — animals, food, places, and random — with 36 words each. Every word is tagged easy, medium, or hard: each category has 12 at each difficulty, so the library holds 48 words per difficulty overall.
Does no-repeats treat each filter combination separately?
Yes. Used words are tracked per category-and-difficulty pairing, so hard animal words and easy animal words keep independent lists, and each list resets once you've exhausted it.
What if my category has no words at the chosen difficulty?
It doesn't happen with the built-in list, which has 12 words at every category-and-difficulty combination. If a combination were ever empty, the tool would fall back to drawing from the whole category rather than showing an error.
Is this the same word list as the spelling word generator?
No. The spelling tool uses graded K-12 study lists shown in the open; hangman draws from a separate game-focused set that stays hidden until the host reveals it.
